The day had been a long and exhausting series of tests for Landon. A weight had been placed on him, and he was unable to discover a way to shake the feeling it was going to overpower him. Given his experience, and the lifetimes of knowledge he possessed, the concern of total failure was less than daunting. Yet the day crept on, tugging at his patience. As the doors to Sickbay slid open, he made his way directly to the private suite which held the Captain. Captain Dar.

It saddened him more than he’d previously realized to know the man might never recover from the coma. If the Trill Symbiosis commission had anything to say about it, he’d get a couple months to wake up, maybe a little more. If Dar didn’t fully recover in that time they might choose another host and declare Olan unsuitable to host the Dar symbiont. The thought forced a deep frown into Neyes’ features. As much as he wanted to hate the man for allowing them to be pulled into the situation with the Romulans, and leaving Landon to fend for himself and Ivanova… he just didn’t seem able to hold it against him. Dar had been his Captain and leader for nearly two years.

Neyes valued his relationship with his Captain. Now that person was himself, instead of the man he’d come to admire and respect.

Dar lay on the bio-bed, cold and frozen in slumber, when Neyes entered the suite. “How’d he do?” Neyes asked, referring to the Captain’s welfare during the battle.

"He's...," Mackenzie smiled weakly and shrugged, "Stable for now, I guess."

"I wanted to discuss the implications of the crew, if the Captain doesn't recover in the next 24 hours... So this is like a little mini-meeting if you will." Neyes said, with some difficulty. It was a struggle to appear respectful of Captain Dar and still direct the crew without him. Landon felt like he was slapping Olan in the face with every word about the very possible eventuality. Olan wouldn't wake up, and he would be sent to Trill for medical care, an event which would effectively end his tenure as a starship Captain.

Neyes turned to Larel, the new counselor. "Thank you for coming, Lieutenant. How is the crew?"

Cody smiled slightly and said "To be honest sir, the crew is tense, which is understandble in a battle situation. However they are also a bit shaken, and I sense a strong feeling of confusion at the moment. They are looking for direction, and are a bit ... scared sir."

A few steps brought Landon to the far side of the room, a distracted look on his face. It was a refreshing change of pace to have a counselor back on the roster, and he would certainly appreciate the help understanding the culture of the ship. Landon wanted to be a good leader, if it was so demanded on him, and Larel was going to help him do that. "And how do you think Captain Dar's... lack of recovery will go over."

Shaking his head, Cody replied "I believe that is part of the tension sir. Captain Dar is their leader, and they are concerned about him. I don't mean any disrespect, but I have a strong sense that they want answers about how he is doing, and when he will be back on duty. The news of his ... current medical situation will not go over well sir."

"The crew knows he's not doing so hot," Neyes pointed out. They had known for some time, actually, and no one seemed able to determine exactly why he had gone under. That's probably it, he thought. No one knows why.

A lingering dissapointment hung in the air as Landon spoke. They'd all hoped Dar would have pulled through like the last time he'd fallen ill. The crew hoped he'd wake up and take command again, so did Neyes. Any thoughts of resentment or jealously for the preferrence for Dar was replaced by the desire to see him well. Landon wanted his fellow Trill to get back on his feet, because the alternative...

Landon sighed, "I don't expect the crew to start riots in the corridors, Mr. Larel. They'll get over it, mostly. I just want to know how I can help smoothe the adjustment."

Nodding, Cody replied "I believe just spending time with the crew when you can, will help sir. Reaching out when you feel someone is concerned about something and being open to feedback will mean a lot. The crew respects you, but they are .. used to Dar's command. I think you need to show yourself as being open and willing to take suggestions. I also think you need to acknowledge that the captain won't be coming back, and that you will do your best to command the ship your own way." He hoped he hadn't spoken to freely, but he was new to the ship, and hadn't served with Dar personally. He knew however, that the transition to a new commanding officer would be a challenge, and he was willing to help in any way he could.

Neyes looked about at the others in the room and suddenly felt more like his uniform was missing instead of covering him up. Spending time with the crew when you can, though, he was going to need time to process how exactly it could be done. The words seemed to breeze in one ear and out the other as he listened to the Lieutenant.

"I'm afraid I don't exactly have oodles of time on my hands at the moment, Counselor," Landon said, looking back out at the very much occupied sickbay, "but I'll see what I can do."

He turned to Cannon, "Is it safe to move the Captain? Once we're within range I think the transporters might be our best option."

"I'm going to say that considering his condition and how it has been, if you are going to move the captain, I suggest you do it as soon as possible, as he's stable for now." She replied with slight hesitation.

Landon felt a pull of hesitation of his own, but he had to drive the mission home and get the ship back on track. "Ok," he sighed, "make the arrangements for his transport, Doc, and since Rofer is tending to the injured I'll need you to report to the breifing room when you're finished. Larel you're with me, we've got a meeting to get to."
