“Say we realign the positron flow matrix to compensate for the field instability. Can we keep three of the cores running to keep the fourth in check while we repair it? Or so we need to shut down the whole system.” Neyes said, standing watch over the repair efforts in Engineering.

Vindicator had sustained heavy damage to select areas of the ship, and the cores had taken a little heat as well. With the dry-docks overwhelmed, handling damaged ships after the Cardassian attack, Neyes had volunteered the Vindicator to handle its own repairs. This gesture effectively helped smooth the process of getting Home Fleet back in working order, but left the Engineering crew with the steep task of patching up the ship. Hull breaches, power failures, decoupled relays, among other things were all littered about after the initial repairs. Most of the ship was in working order, but there were some items on the repair schedule which required the ship to be standing still.

Repairing the cores was one of those items.

"The damaged core is already offline sir," Almar replied as he slid himself out from under the lower Injector Assembly and threw a pair of tools into his case, selecting another before looking up, "One of the things I admired about this Quantite Fusion Core is that we can disable one while keeping the others intact, technically we can maintain main power using only one core and shut down three of them, but a single core cannot support anything faster than Warp Five, in standard operating mode, we run two cores at fifty percent, even though this would appear to give the same amount of energy, it actually more efficient and allows us a greater level of control."

Landon nodded, "I remember being thoroughly irritated at the change in injector controls at the helm. What do you suggest?"

Almar began preparing the rest of the core for removal, the dilithium matrix having been removed by one of his assistants a few days ago, "If you take a look at the display on the pool table sir, you can see why we need to remove the core completely," the Cardassian stated as he pulled himself out from under it and gave a quick whistle, causing two engineers with grav-lifts to begin their work of taking the disabled apparatus out of its mountings, "We've had no end of problems with this specific core, injection problems, alignment problems and now we have far too many microfractures to use it safely."

Again, Neyes found himself deferring to Almar. The man seemed to have a firm grasp of the big picture. For a moment, the new captain felt a twinge of jealously. A fleeting thought which he quickly squashed. "Agreed. So this leaves us with one less backup in case not everything goes... according to plan, on this mission."

"Got it in one sir," Almar replied with a slight smile, the scales on his neck flexing with his skin.

"How long will replacing the fourth core take?"

"It's going to take us twelve hours at the fastest sir," the Cardassian replied, "I've only had to oversee the installation of a full core once and that was when I helped to install the engines, something like this hasn't been done without a full Starbase repair crew, so I'll be taking things slowly to ensure no damage is caused."

Landon smirked in satisfaction, "Great, keep me appraised," he tapped the console with finality, "oh and when you have time, my replicator has been acting up." He teased, heading out the door.
