Shortly after the away mission briefing, the two diligent task-forces went about on their separate ways. The discussion had been fruitful and sufficient by Neyes’ standards, and at the very least he had managed to incite some discussion and concerns. As he sat braced in the command chair on the bridge, he took a moment to reflect on his perspective on the crew. There weren’t many opportunities for him to just sit and think.

Landon wanted nothing more than a stream-lined, hardened crew of officers hell-bent on representing the very best Starfleet had to offer. The Vindicator embodied one of the most emboldening, intimidating vessels the 25th century had to offer. From stem to stern there sat hundreds of men and women from diverse backgrounds, working together to drive the ship forward. Space only offered itself to those willing to fill it however. It seemed to Landon that each time the crew got together to discuss anything of consequence, a rift of mutual exclusivity permeated the whole. Each department had its own plan and its own agenda on how things needed to be done.

The lack of cohesion was never more prevalent in a starship department than with the prime example demonstrated by the Marine Corp. Sticks and stones were just that far away from erupting into an all-holds-barred brawl, and it was far more often than the young captain felt comfortable with. Landon himself had needed to take retreats from the Marine Captains, stealing himself away to avoid conflicts with the three officers. Conversation would spiral into dissatisfaction, which then would inevitably become a contest of power. He felt an overbearing sense of unwanted guilt for it all, though. Teamwork and unity would keep them from getting everyone killed, and it was all Neyes wanted for his crew. After all, his crew could expect nothing less than his very best when it came to keeping them alive.

Noturi was his game-plan. Sending every able-bodied leader down to the surface would allow them to finally sit face to face with the reality that everyone on the Vindicator was a member of one crew, one team, and voice. Workload aside, Neyes wanted them all to take charge of the mission. Hopefully it wouldn’t ultimately explode in his face.

He sighed at the possibility.

“Crewman. What’s our status?” Neyes asked the helmsman sitting down at the front of the bridge.

The 30-something blue-eyed man turned with a bubbly demeanor. Landon found his light-hearted nature a little odd, since he was always the same. Crewman Thomas was just… always in a good mood, and it sometimes gave Neyes pause. No coffee? No questions? The man was so low-maintenance it was almost frightening. “We’re clear to vacate Earth spacedock. All stations report green.”

Landon smiled, the repairs had been a long distraction he hadn’t wanted. “Good. Let’s get the hell out of here before any more freighter captains try to sell me gravity plating. Take us out, Mr. Thomas. Thrusters only until we clear starbase.

The hull of the newly repaired Vindicator gleamed brightly in the light of the Sol star. Her engines roared to life, deep and penetrating as the power filled the ship once again. Red flares of heat pulsed from the small thruster ports, and the bridge vibrated with new energy. Given the green light to venture once again out into open space, she began to move in reverse, careful to respect the station as she moved her way with delicate precision. From what seemed like inches, but in reality was over a hundred meters, the saucer section of the ship passed its mooring docks and cleared the main head of their docking station. The lights on the primary and secondary hulls immediately illuminated the darkest parts of the hull, showing off the words every Captain loved to see.

“We’ve cleared spacedock, engaging impulse to clear the system.”

Relaxing a little as they were once again under their own power, Neyes grinned despite himself. “Set course and power the slipstream drive.”

The minutes passed as an even more surging rumble of power coursed into the ship, followed by a silent blue spread across the alert lighting. They’d be on their way in no time.

“We’re clear, Captain.”

Neyes gripped the edge of his armrest in anticipation, “Alright, crewman…”

“Hit it.”
