1,356 words; about a 7 minute read

Mission: In the Dark
Location: Holodeck - After Dark program

In all the time that Chloe had spent in Starfleet, she had not once found herself in a dress for a mandatory ceremony. She wasn't use to dresses not really. Chloe didn't even know anyone on the ship except for Te'Shara whom had gotten several awards, and Amelia whom nearly walked the plank or something like that.

Chloe was wearing a purple corset dress that flared out over a white silk skirt little star detailing over the front of the desk. her blond white hair flowed down her back like a river of ringlets and violet ribbons mixed into it.

When the awards presentation had finished, and his two red headed task mistresses had disappeared into the mass of crew and brass, Cecil was left without an idea of what to do with himself. He didn't often attend parties like this, and he was half tempted to make his escape early. The only trouble was, if the Commander — no, she was Captain now — if she needed something, it would undo all his hard work to get her attention if he wasn't available. So he stood and people watched, nursing a virgin Margarita. Then he spotted a familiar silhouette across the dance floor.

"Miss Ebonheart," he said, approaching her as he tugged at his dress uniform. He needed to get it altered, it still didn't fit right.

Chloe was feeling out of place really, especially in a dress to be quite honest. So when she heard a familiar voice she was both relieved and embarrassed to hear him. turning to face Cecil she smiled up at him. "Hello Cecil how are you?" She asked her voice a nervous purr.

"I am absolutely at a loss as to what to do with myself," he admitted, a small smile in sympathy of the nervousness he heard in her voice. "You look nice," he added, tugging again at his uniform. How he'd managed to make it through the ceremony without doing so on the stage was still a mystery to him.

"I've never been to a ceremony like this in a dress. Normally I'd wear my dress uniform, but some how I had a feeling the dresses were mandatory." Chloe said smiling nervously still. "how have you been?" She asked softly.

"Busy," he admitted, shifting a little bit. He sometimes wished uniforms had pockets, so he had somewhere to put his hands when he didn't have a PADD to hold. "I think I've gotten on the command team's radar, finally. I only had to ride Waterhouse's coat tails for a little while to get there. I had a feeling about her when she came on board," he admitted with a grin.

"Ah so you cozied up to Waterhouse for political gain?" She asked with a slight smirk to show she's teasing. "Um do you want to dance?" She asked shyly looking towards the dance floor. She was shy only because she had really bad luck with relationships.

"If you spent time in the bowels of the ship, filing digital paperwork, you'd be riding coattails to the bridge if you could too," he insisted, though he grinned at her and held out his hand so he could guide her to the dance floor.

"Very true, I just might have." She smiled softly at him as he lead her onto the dance floor, hoping she didn't embarrass herself since she wasn't the best dancer.

"How's security been treating you since your arrival?" he asked, a hand finding her waist and helping lead her into step on the dance floor.

"Um well they put me to work guarding security, I helped a marine pick a few from the ranks of security to help secure the ship, granted I thought that's what Security is for. Recently I learned we're considered more of a kind of space cop then capable of keeping a ship secure." She smirked managing not to stumble and move some what gracefully as her feline nature would imply. "I met and probably insulted one of my fellow security officers." She added for dramatic effect sticking her tongue out.

"Already making friends, I see," he winked at her. "Marines on a ship throw things out of balance, it's why so many officers get testy around them. It takes a careful hand to keep things steady with them around," he observed as he took half a step back, his hand sliding off her waist and his other raising up. The way he turned his hand that held hers hinted towards the spin he was trying to guide her into.

Chloe let him guide her into a graceful spin that he was hinting at moving out away from his body with the spin as she smiled at him softly.

"I heard Intel was running security right now," he observed, a gentle tug spinning her back towards him, and his free hand finding her waist again.

"That is what I heard as well so I report to Waterhouse I think, not sure." Chloe smirked spinning back towards him gracefully her hand finding his hand as his found her waist.

"I heard it was Commander Archer? Isn't he chief intel?" Cecil made a face as he thought about it. "I don't know that Waterhouse really has any authority... she just got stuff done." There was a mix of awe, suspicion, and confusion in his voice as he said this. "The Captain seems to hold her in some regard though... that was some promotion." He whistled softly.

"It was. I thought Commander Archer was in the brig?" Chloe asked arching one brow as they continued to dance. after all that was what she had read in recent reports.

"I guess there was some intel reason for his display on the bridge?" Cecil offered, unsure because his sources had been vague. "After a visit from Ivanova, that spoon-headed engineer, and Waterhouse, he was let out and allowed to carry on as he always does. Didn't you see him tonight? He received an award." Cecil looked around, wondering if he'd spot the commander.

"I did was surprised, but we don't know everything that happened, could be that he actually saved the ship and crew." Chloe pointed out.

"Intel's always happy to remind us how much we don't know," he returned with a snort. Noticing the current song winding down, he pushed Chloe's out into a spin again, and when he pulled he back again he cradled her around the waist and guided her into a dip.

"Eep." Chloe gasped as he did this, but didn't struggle she let the dip play out until she was back on her feet and blushed her tail having a mind of it's own was now wrapped around his leg.

He grinned wide at her surprise at the dip, that had been half his intention for it after all. When he noticed her tail around his leg, an eyebrow rose in question. "I hope you enjoyed that as much as I did," he said, stepping back with a half bow, and pressing his lips to the back of her hand for a fleeting moment.

Chloe blushed, she had. She'd never had anyone kiss her hand before and the fact that she was a near porcelain in complexion the red to her cheeks was quiet noticeable. "I did enjoy the dance." Chloe said softly her words rolling accentuating her words slightly.

Cecil opened his mouth to respond, but then he spotted the Captain across the room. Making eye contact, it was clear she needed him to do something, and he sighed softly. "Excuse me, the Captain needs me. Enjoy the rest of your evening," he said with a slight nod of his head. He quickly made his way to Ivanova's side.

Chloe held her hands before her trying not to fidget nervously as she watched him go see what the Captain needed. it was good to be needed like that. She walked off to get a glass of something to drink. wondering if she could slip out soon.
