Mission: Resurgere
Location: Cold Station Theta, Personal Quarters

Kaleb sat motionless on his bunk waiting for the station's comm-panel to chirp letting him know that Commodore Ivanova was in labor and his presence was required in sick bay. Letting his mind drift back over the events that had destroyed the Vindicator he slipped farther back to the first traumatic experience of his Starfleet career, an event that had changed his mind about his future and that had shaped his recent past.

The USS Bastion had been a dream assignment for the twenty six year old Andorian Ensign. She was a Horizon Class hospital ship fresh from the yards at Utopia Planitia, Mars, and he had learned the schematics of the ship inside and out the very day he had received his orders. Kaleb would be stationed as a junior pathologist and would be assigned a rotating shift in sickbay. The first year aboard the Bastion was like a dream come true for the blue skinned doctor. He made several key discoveries and developed a treatment alongside his senior officer for Theptarian Diphtheria. Then came the assignment to Sector 243 near the Ordari Prime System, when everything changed.

Ordari Prime was at war with Nisus, a nearby system of early warp capable marauders, though they didn't know it until they were all but wiped out. The Ordari were an advanced but anti-warlike people populating what amounted to little more than a resort planet. When the attacks came they were quick and deadly. Starfleet set up a defensive perimeter at the request of the surviving Ordari and the Bastion went to work. Injuries ranged from plasma burns to grotesque avulsions and amputations. The horrors that Kaleb had witnessed during that humanitarian aid mission had turned him away from practicing medicine and toward the laboratory. He had minored in micro and xenobiology which had made the transition to the science department easy. Furthermore, he had quickly excelled in his continuing studies in astrophysics which earned him a place of honor aboard Starbase 158 and had led him to a position as Chief Science Officer aboard the Vindicator.

It was the Vindicator that had brought him back to medicine. The horrors in the wake of destruction wrought by the Romulan Tr'Bak had awakened his old desires to help and to heal. It hadn't taken long before Kaleb decided to take a temporary assignment of duty aboard Cold Station Theta which was critically short of medical staff. Over the course of the past two months Kaleb had been so busy between the pathology lab and playing at being a doctor again that he had all but forgotten that he was still a designated member of the Science Corrps. When earlier today, Commodore Ivanova had suggested that he become her Chief Medical Officer when the new Vindicator came out of new construction had taken him aback.

At some point during his reflection he had fallen asleep and now the chime of the station's intercom system woke him up with a start. Kaleb set up in bed and mumbled, "Yes, what is it?"

"Dr. Ch'Valenvok, Commodore Ivanova is being checked into the maternity suite now, Sir." The on - duty nurse chimed in a way too bubbly voice.

"Very well. I am on my way." Kaleb said as he hurriedly dressed and left his interrupted sleep in the room behind him.
