Mission: Secret Meetings
Location: Sickbay

Neyes had rarely been on the administrative side of an injury to a crewman, other than someone in his department being injured he had extremely limited experience on the matter. Of course, he'd seen his fair share of scrapes and bruises over the years on his ride up the ranks. Nothing had quite measured up to the disturbing nature of the Chief Engineering Officer's wounds, however...

Landon stepped into Sickbay, noticing both the medical officer usually assigned this shift, and the Cardassian engineer on a bio-bed waiting for him. He frowned a little, noticing how dispondent the man looked.

"How is he?" Neyes asked the doctor.

She turned to the Commander and motioned at the vitals readout, "He'll be just fine. We repaired a good deal of concussive wounds to his upper skeleton, as well as some impact fractures. We're doing regular check-ups to monitor his healing."

"Commander." Neyes started. Moving in a little closer and spoke quieter, trying to ease off on the 'I'm the XO' disposition, "I read the report on what happened, but I'd like you to tell me."

"People being people Commander," Almar replied slowly, he was still extremely sore, the doctors on Earth and on the Vindicator had both been working to heal him, but it was also going to take time, "They see only the colour and texture of my skin, they don't stop to feel my heart."

While Landon was not the most pragmatic of people, to be sure, he had been hoping for something a little more detailed. He sighed and looked the man over for a moment.

"I thought Earth was supposed to be over this kind of behavior." Landon said to no one in particular, while he silently held back his own distaste for the actions of Almar's people. He too had been a victim of the heinous crimes the Cardassians seemed to enjoy inflicting on the rest of the Galaxy. It was almost at every turn they were clawing at their neighbors for just another few inches of pride and power. While Neyes would never condone what happened, it was unfortunate he could begin to understand the fear behind it.

Landon sat on the opposite bio-bed. "Give us a minute, doc."

She nodded and gathered her tools before going leaving the private treatment room.

"I hate to force you into recounting something like this, Commander. I need you to be more specific, though." Neyes pressed. "What happened exactly. Did they say anything to you? Did they bear anything that would help us to identify who did this?"

"It happened as I left one of the galleries in Paris," the Cardassian began as he closed his eyes for a moment, "I saw four guys fan out around me, each carrying a weapon, they called me 'Cardie Scum' and said I was a disgrace to the uniform," he continued before pausing and swallowing hard, "That was all that was said before they began attacking me, as for identifying them, I wouldn't be able to distinguish them from any other Humans in civilian clothing."

Neyes listened intently as the man recounted his story of the crime. For all intents and purposes, it was a decent enough telling of events, and Landon would be able to progress with an investigation off it. He could see the hurt in the man's eyes. As much as the XO knew Almar was hurt, it disturbed Neyes more to think the man wasn't all that surprised or resentful.

"You didn't deserve this, Commander. I'll contact the local authorities in France, see if anything was recorded of the incident. You let me know if you can remember anything else, alright?" Landon finally said.

"Of course sir," Almar replied with a half smile that made his face ache as he lay near motionless, restrained so he wouldn't make his injuries worse, "I had half expected something like this to happen when the Cardassians attacked the Federation, I've faced similar all my life because of the Dominion."

"Rest up, I'll let you know if I hear anything." Neyes said, returning the grin. Landon rather liked the man's keen ability to take the crime against him in such stride.
