712 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: In the Dark

Having taken the runabout Meramec, James was currently enroute towards the Klingon penal colony Rura Penthe in hopes of freeing a former Starfleet Operative that had been imprisoned there for the past decade. “Computer, show me all information regarding Agrippa Ramaaker.”

The computer beeped in response, “Agrippa Ramaaker is Xepolite and was captured, charged, and found guilty of political crimes on Qo’nos. Ramaaker is currently serving a life sentence on Rura Penthe.”

“What about Agrippa’s service record?”

“Agrippa Ramaaker served as a Section 31 operative for Starfleet Intelligence from stardate 239009.09 until captured on stardate 240403.27. Ramaaker’s expertise incudes weapons systems, explosives, hand to hand combat, political assassination, criminal underground contacts, xeno linguistics, subterfuge, espionage, warp theory, and fusion reactors.”

“I think Agrippa will do just fine.” Jamesnodded and made his way to the replicator, “Ice tea, sweet.” Taking the tea he head back to the flight control systems.

An obnoxious beeping sound roused James from a nap and alerted him that he was receiving an incoming transmission. Sitting up, he wiped the sleep from his eyes. “On screen.” He ordered the computer to put the call through.

“Federation vessel, this is Lieutenant Commander Mo’lar, commander of this facility. What do you want?”

“Qapla! I am Commander James Archer. I’m here to speak with you about one of your prisoners. If you would allow me to transport to your office, I’m sure you will find what I have to say… intriguing.”

“Hmmm, you have 30 minutes. The transport inhibitor will be down shortly.”

James grabbed one of two relatively heavy chests, and made his way to the transporter. “laQ!” James dematerializes and reappeared in a very blandly lit, smoky room. “Mo’lar! I need Agrippa Raamakar.”

The portly Klingon laughed, “You think you can just have yourself transported into my office and demand the release of one of our prisoners?”

“Oh no no no, of course not. I can give you enough gold pressed latinum for you to rebuild your family’s fleet.” The lid on the chest popped open, as James kicked it, reveling a pile of GPL. “This is half. The other half is contingent upon receipt of Agrippa Raamakar.”

“This is a trick!” Yelled Mo’lar, getting to his feet.

“No, not a trick. A deal.” James smiled, “I give you 250,000 gold pressed latinum now, and another 250,000 when we transport to the runabout alive.”

“What makes you think I won’t kill you both and take the gold anyway?”

“OK so maybe there is a slight trick.” James continued to smile, “If we’re not back on the runabout in 10 minutes, the computer is set to transport the remaining latinum into the middle of the Chancellor’s chambers with a note explaining how you’re planning on overthrowing the Klingon Government.”

“WHAT!?”

“9 minutes. And we both know how the Chancellor loves traitors.”

“You’re bluffing!”

“I don’t bluff. I never bluff.” James paused for a moment then to himself out loud, “ At least, I don’t think I bluff. Maybe I do bluff, but not often. It can’t be that often that I bluff. I mean, my friends, if you can call them my friends never accuse me of bluffing…”

“ENOUGH!” Mo’lar hits his commbadge, “jIHvaD qama' DIvI' qem! (Bring me the Federation prisoner!)”

“You may want to hurry, you only have 8 minutes.”

“Get them out of here!”

James grinned as he found himself rematerializing on the runabout. A few seconds later a very emaciated and broken Xepolite female materialized on board. He quickly checked her vitals and gave her an injection of Terakine and Kayolane, carefully lay her in an empty bunk.

The computer beeps indicating an incoming transmission. “Computer, open the channel.”

“Where’s the rest of my money, human?”

“You’ll get it in a minute. I’m making sure that this is in fact Agrippa Ramaakar. Then, and only then will you get your money.” James grunted as he started running an IV and performing a DNA scan which confirmed the Xepolite’s identity. “Computer, transport chest number 2, and lay in heading 293 mark 205 warp 3.”

The computer beeped in compliance, the second chest dematerialized in the standard whine of a transporter beam. “Engage!”
