Joint Personal Log:Robyn Maxwell/Sally Moffat: Revalation (part1)

Posted on Tue Sep 16th, 2014 @ 2:35pm by Ensign Robyn Maxwell

1,171 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: Are You Touched?
Location: After Dark Lounge
Timeline: Current

Sallys welcoming smile and bright greeting to the newcomer caused the only other customer at the bar to glance in her direction before returning to his book.

Robyn returned the smile recalling the barmaids name from the previous visit to the lounge.
"Hello Sally" she said, then to answer the standard question replied that she hadn't actually come in for a drink but really just to look for someone.

"Oh ok." Sally replied "...if you're really sure you don't want anything then but dont worry I won't try to sell you one of our choice mementos or gifts after all your friend bought the little soldier last time so I can let you off for once."
She leaned a little closer and continued in a loud whisper: " Not everyone does." then straightened up looking meaningfully along the bar at the customer and his book.
Robyn followed her gaze then turned back at Sally as the young woman continued her tale. She spoke in a lower tone than usual.

" He's reading about Wars or something but wasnt even interested in our soldiers although I admit the Klingon Warrior does look as if hes carrying a shovel on a long pole so I thought the little Guard you know the one your friend bought might be more suitable but he asked me why he would want an English soldier when he's French and to be honest the thought hadn't occurred to me so ofcourse what else could he need but a memento of home but even the Eiffel Tower didnt raise a sad smile and wistful sigh so Ive left him to it...temporarily."
She straightened a small mat on the bar with an air of innocence that implied she would not be letting the matter lie.

Robyn perched herself on a bar stool.
"Perhaps he just wanted to have peace and quiet to enjoy a drink and read his book." she suggested.

"Looks that way but the book seems to be winning because thats still his first drink and he's hardly touched it though sometimes he has two or three on occasion not that that makes any difference to him but some people can't handle more than a couple of glasses but that doesnt happen often in a place like 'this' because most of 'our' customers have duty the next day so pace themselves except if they're on R and R but I cant really say how they behave then because this is the first R and R we've had and most of them have beamed off ship as you see."
She waved her hand to encompass the virtually empty lounge and gave Robyn a helpless shrug followed by a quick smile.

Robyn nodded understanding.

"So are you looking for Doctor Fisher?" Sally asked. Robyn blinked in surprise, wondering how Sally arrived at that conclusion.

"Yes I am...I wondered if he was in here by any chance."

"Not anymore he came in a couple of hours ago and seemed a bit quiet not that hes a rowdy sort as you know but he wasn't his usual happy self not that I know him that well but he seems a happy self sort of person and he definately wasnt one this time and I knew it straight off because he asked for Romulan 'Mix' and make it a double which is never a wise thing to have at the best of times and a sure sign of someone wanting to drown their sorrows."

"Drown his sorrows?" Robyn asked uncertainly.

Sally nodded, looked rather uncomfortable then said:
"I think I might have made it worse for him actually although ofcourse I didnt mean to Id never upset anyone if I could help it and to be honest I wasn't really sure but the last time you two were in here I said to myself "Sally" I said " Sally they are one happy couple aren't they?" and I thought you were you see because you were isolating yourselves and just having such a perfect time laughing and joking and enjoying each others company I thought it was a given...sorry."
Her narrative had ended on a subdued note.

Robyn, who was a little confused in the way things were running said:
"I don't understand...Scott came in to drown sorrows and you think we're a couple?"

Sally nodded. "Oh yes.." she said with certainty. "...both of you seemed to have that air about you that couples have but obviously I'd got it wrong because when I asked where you were Doctor Fisher got all sort of 'defensive' you know how you do when you don't want to talk about something but the other person is determined to...like that.

"Right." was all Robyn could say in the flow of the explanation wondering where it was going to lead and with an awful foreboding.

"So he sort of stood there right next to where you are actually and said something like 'Sally with the greatest respect' and when people say that you know they're going to disagree with you at the very least 'you dont know what you're talking about the young lady in question and I have never had a relationship we are not having one now and we never will have one in the future ok?' and he sounded so stern I just said ok back but didnt say it just went... "
she mouthed O..K
"...then he asked if he was getting his drink here or not so I gave him a glass and I said ofcourse and when he had the glass in his hand he sort of looked at it like people sometimes do with that stuff because it takes nerve to drink it then he picked the glass up and tipped it straight down his throat like this .."
she mimicked lifting a glass and tipping her head right back to drink it in one quick smooth action
"..and I can tell you that he did alright because he didnt cough or splutter just closed his eyes for a fraction of a second then sort of pressed the glass into the bar I dont know if he could speak because I wasnt going to say anything else knowing he was upset and then he left."

She waited for Robyn to say something, her hands resting on the edge of the bar as she tried to read the expressions crossing Robyns face.
"Have I made it worse?" she asked when nothing was forthcoming.

Robyn exhaled a long breath, shaking her head slowly and staring at the bar top.

"It couldnt be any worse." she said as though speaking to herself " ohhhhh....." She leaned forward and rested her forehead in the palm of her hand, her elbow on the bar and remained still.

Sally, sensing that this was a more involved situation than she had thought, also put her elbows on the bar, leaned forward and rested her chin in her hands looking expectantly at Robyns bowed head.
