836 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Ballynamony
Location: USS Vindicator | Sickbay

The Italian strode in, it was like she was back in her old job. She couldn't help but smile a little. It soon vanished as she looked around for a doctor, any one. As per request, Adrianna was here for her physical before she could start.

Kaleb had slept like a rock and still carried the last remnants of a dreamy haze with him to his office. He had grown fond of the cappuccinos he had been introduced to at Earth Space Dock and synthesized one using his office replicator. The ward was empty except for an amnesiac security officer with an unexplained trauma to the head. A quick check of his desk computer showed there was no one in sick call, as of yet. He sat down at his desk and had just started his morning routine when a chime alerted him that Lieutenant Junior Grade Baciami had entered Sickbay. He stood and moved toward the door of his office. "Good morning, Lieutenant. How can I help you today?"

Adrianna smiled a little, " standard check up before returning to duty."

Kaleb smiled and his antenna bobbed lazily as he walked out of his office and led the young Lieutenant to exam-1. "Please lie down on the biobed there and we will do a few scans and have you on your way in no time." Kaleb had worked out a system where the biobed could gather vast amounts of information on his patients and cross reference his own diagnostic database to help provide the most advanced treatment and care in Starfleet. He figured it was just one of the perks of having been with the ship since keel was laid. Many of the systems in sickbay and in fact he had been consulted about the layout of the deck and medical suites as well. "Lieutenant, have you had any recent illnesses, headaches, wounds, or the like in the last few weeks?"

"Shotgun to the hip six weeks ago but it missed all. It was just a scratch," she replied bluntly. The truth of the matter was that family reunions could often end in gun fights. A hazard of being a Baciami.

Kaleb's antenna folded back at the answer he received. "A shotgun...left a scratch?" Arcane forms of weaponry did still exist on Earth but most w'ere in museums. Kaleb reviewed his tricorder readings to check for signs of infection or possible shrapnel. The tissue had healed where she had indicated and no permanent damage was done. "You are one lucky person. There aren't many things worse than a shotgun blast, I hear." A shotgun was a devastating weapon at close range, supposedly shredding flesh with hundreds of small lead balls.

"Do these kinds of things happen to you often, Lieutenant?" Kaleb asked with a grin on his face.

She liked this CMO, he was easy to read. Nevertheless, honesty seemed like the best foot forward, " my father will occasionally get out his collection at reunions. One of my brothers will get cocky but forget they are loaded. They is lousy shot." Adrianna couldn't help but chuckle slightly at the memory of her brother going very pale when he had realized what had happened. It was same to say the young woman had taken revenge, however, how 'eye for an eye' it was would not be discussed unless she could fully trust the man.

Kaleb's face relaxed and his antenna twitched their way back up. "Well, beyond that you appear to be in good health. I can't find any reason physically that would bar your return to duty. I am just going to put a note here clearing you. I would recommend that you stop by Dr. Neyes. The Commander is our Chief Counselor and will no doubt want to meet you." Kaleb finished annotating Lieutenant Baciami's results in her medical record. "Please don't hesitate to come see me if you have any medical issues, Lieutenant."

"I will be fine. My apologies in advance if you have a lot of Security staff in the first few weeks. It is standard 'getting to know you' things I do," She couldn't help but grin. She tended to run a place a bit harder during the first few weeks. It let her know which members of staff would be better doing what. Her father always did the same for his 'staff'. In one sense Adrianna learned from the best.

Kaleb wondered if she was being serious. "Try not to break anything if you can avoid it, Lieutenant." He said as he packed his tricorder back in its case. She was an odd duck for sure but Kaleb had seen his share of odd ducks aboard this ship. "You are cleared for duty. Thank you for your time, Lieutenant. Try to stay out of trouble moving forward." Kaleb turned and strolled out the door.
