It Couldn't Be...

Mission: Secret Meetings

"What's the point in all this if you're not even going to go see her?"

Saia concentrated on the console screen in front of her and her only reply was tapping at the screen without acknowledging Nara was even there.

"So, now you're actively avoiding me as well?" Nara reached out and grabbed Saia'a shoulder, "Saia!"

Saia jumped a bit, but looked Nara straight in the eye, "That's Lieutenant, Ensign."

Nara pursed her lips, "Junior grade."

"Still outranks Ensign." Saia shoved off the hand, "Now, if you'll excuse me. I have work to do." Saia looked back at the console and she knew she hit below the belt, but she didn't care. "You worked in security. Go help find the intruder." She handed Nara a PADD, "Here's the latest scans. There might be some indication of a presence in the jeffries tubes." Saia looked over at Nara and nodded at her to leave. "Dismissed." Ok, she wasn't sure if she had the right to say that and it was rubbing salt in a wound, but she wanted to push Nara away.

Nara nodded professionally and left. She stopped by the Intel office and spotted Saul. "We need to talk."

Saul looked up mildly agitated, "Kinda busy here."

"Thirty seconds."

"Ensign.." He swallowed noting the anger in her face. The calling out of her rank was an extra sore spot. He stood and guided her by the elbow into the corridor. "You saw the intruder?"

She signed. She knew there were bigger things, but Saia was falling apart, "Why isn't your 'wife' being more firm about seeing Saia?"

"Well, for one, there wasn't much time. And also, Saia has been actively avoiding her and ... well... This is how my 'wife' put it. Saia has been hiding in this for so long, she's comfortable in it. She's comfortable in her personal hell. As much as it's destroying her, she doesn't even know how to start climbing out. It's more frightening to step out than to stay. If it helps, she's got some ideas on how to help ease and coax Saia gently." He stepped back toward the entrance to the Intel office, "After we deal with the intruder."

Back in the lab, Saia didn't blink as she watched the data. A figure hovered over her bent and whispering in her ear as she worked, "You'll never see it coming. It'll come when you think you're safe. Once it's in your past and barely just a forgotten nightmare. That's when I'll be back. That's when the fun will start again." She began to tremble as she felt hands touch her. The struggle between logically knowing it was all in her mind and it feeling too real for logic to matter was going strong, until she snapped and spasmed out of the stool and rushed out the door into the corridor. There, she returned to her senses.

A lab tech stepped out, "Are you alright?"

Saia turned, still trembling, "I'm just a little jumpy. Intruder and all." She stepped back into the lab and went back to work. Her haunting tormentor hovered over her but she struggled to concentrate on finding the intruder and ignoring her paranoia. It couldn't possibly be him.
