Mission: In the Dark

After making sure that Rochelle had been taken back to her ready room in privacy, Almar found himself returning to his own lair, the constant throbbing of the quantite fusion core was a soothing presence to the scaled engineer, it spoke to a primal part of his soul and as he stepped into his office for the first time in what seemed like forever, it calmed his worries, he found himself sitting behind his desk, unfastening his jacket and putting his feet up, shifting a pile of reports that were yet to be filed.

Zola had been pulling doubles since the command team had been retrieved, chasing power fluctuations by ear, crawling into the corners other engineers were too big to reach, and compiling a list of things they would need help with when they reached the shipyards. Zola hadn't been asked to do that last thing, nor to work the doubles, but she was ecstatic about all the activity. After months of sitting on her tiny butt getting caught up on fleet tech, anything that got her elbow deep in the metaphoric engine grease left her ears tingling with happiness. Now that Commander Dahe'el was down in engineering, she thought she should bring her list to him.

The atmosphere changed slightly when the young Ferengi found her way to the door of his office, it was subtle, but years spent developing the ship had left the Cardassian with an innate sense of how the ship felt when he was alone, he swung his legs off the desk and turned to face the door, a slight smile placed on his face when he noticed it was the Lieutenant, "Ah, Lieutenant, I was wondering how long it would take you to find me again."

"It might have been sooner if circumstances hadn't pushed us to push the Vindicator towards her limits, but you did what was needed and she can be repaired," Zola smiled, to make it clear this was only an observation, not a critique or commentary. "To that end, I have a list of what we will need the shipyard's assistance with, if you'd like to look." She held out a PADD to the commander.

Almar took the padd in one hand and gave it a quick look over, giving a slight nod as he read through the list of repairs needed at a shipyard, "All things considered, not as bad as I was expecting, we've burnt out the thrusters, which I fully expected, they were not rated for atmospheric flight of a ship this size."

"Are there even specs for thrusters that could handle a ship Vindicator's size in atmosphere?" Zola asked, even as she tried to think of the answer herself. "The last ship I was posted to was a Defiant class, it's a huge change being on Vindicator."

"There aren't," the Cardassian replied with a chuckle, "If there were, I would have had them installed before we launched this beast," he added with another nod, "The Defiant Class is certainly a very different prospect."

"I miss the Emperor, she and I had a bit of a kinship being such tiny things..." Zola admitted. "Well, that and the bond a chief engineer has with their ship." She flashed Dahe'el her trademark sharp little smile, knowing he understood.

"Tell me about it," Almar replied with a chuckle that reverberated around his office, "I've spent the best part of five years working on this ship from planning to construction and when they offered me the position of Chief Engineer, I effectively shook their hand off."

"So you really know Vindicator," Zola observed, bouncing forward into the balls of her feet. "I would love to get a look at your design notes, that is, if you're willing to show me." She turned a little shy as she asked this.

The reply was a quick tapping of a few buttons on her personal padd which magically appeared from his jacket pocket and into his hand, the screen behind him burst into life and displayed the entire construction roll of the Vindicator, "Have at it," he replied with a light chuckle.

Zola's eyes went wide, darting around the screen from where she stood, and she grinned furiously. "Thank you, sir. I look forward to reading all of it."

"I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I did putting it together," the Cardassian replied with another chuckle.
