Mission: In the Dark

As the party started to wind down, Amelia's mother found herself a plaything that could actually stare down her Admiral husband without flinching, and they disappeared together to leave Corey Waterhouse on his own as people drifted out of the holodeck. He spotted his daughter on the back of the balcony as he was making a final swing through before leaving himself, and walked up beside her.

"I would ask if the extra pip was weighing you down yet, but you're not in uniform," he teased as he leaned against the railing next to her. She stepped sideways to shoulder bump him and laughed softly.

"I'm sure it'll come with some extra weight, every promotion seems to," she answered quietly. He looked as if he wanted to say something, but then thought better of it. They stood side by side for a long minute of silence.

"Who was your gentleman friend?" Corey asked her eventually. Amelia straightened up, looking at her father. "He seemed to get a bit of a rise out you, should your mother and I be expecting you to bring him for dinner?"

"I don't know," she admitted softly. "I just met him tonight, and he leaves me... off balance, is the best way to explain it. I invited him to come find my quarters after the party wrapped up." She leaned on the railing again, and Corey made a face.

"Something wrong, Pond?" he asked, laying a hand on her arm. She shook her head. "Why don't you walk your old Dad to the airlock?" When she nodded, he held out his arm for her, which she took with a smile. Their walk was mostly quiet, until they were within sight of the airlock and Corey slid his free hand into a hidden pocket on his uniform.

He held out his hand to her, within his palm a little metal box with the texture of a sewer grate and bright green painted in an enamel around the seams to look like a liquid leaking from within. Amelia let go of his arm, taking the offered box with her head tilted to the side as she opened it. As she squealed and caught him around the neck, he smiled at her.

"I love them, Daddy," she insisted, quickly pulling one of the earrings out of the box. Platinum and peridot, a miniature pair of nunchuks hanging from a delicate hook were soon hanging from one ear, and the matching pair followed into the other ear. "Thank you."

"Congrats on the promotion," he said for the second time this evening. She leaned over to kiss him on the cheek and hug him again. "I won't keep you, in case your friend is waiting for you at your quarters. G'night Pond."

"Night, Daddy."

She waited until her father was clear of the airlock, then she walked back to her quarters slowly. She wasn't in any rush, if Vlimar was waiting it wouldn't hurt for him to wait a little longer. And if he wasn't there, there was no need to rush, right? When she arrived, he wasn't waiting, so she went inside, kicking off her heels as she moved to the duffel bag on the table. Out of it emerged a comic book, and she settled on the couch with it. She made it maybe a third of the way into the comic before she nodded off curled into the corner of her couch.
