Mission: In the Dark
Location: USS Vindicator

=/\= USS VINDICATOR, Approaching Klingon Space =/\=

Like dead weight barreling through space, the Vindicator was preparing to drop from the meager speed of warp four into the Klingon system. Power was cut in half, seeing as how their deuterium supply was nearly exhausted from the heavy burden of their last mission. Rochelle had been informed that because of the crude matter and the exotic magnetic fields of Notura, they had used nearly six times the power just to maintain a stable orbit. Captain Ivanova and the other members of the senior staff were all anticipating the drop now, the bridge oddly silent. With Commander Dahe’el down in engineering, he was the only one not contributing to the suspense.

“Prepare to collapse the warp bubble. Let’s get this over with.” Rochelle said, quickly knotting her hair along her back. If the ship didn’t take to the change in speed well, it was going to get a little bumpy. “All crew this is the Captain. Man your stations, and ready yourself for the drop into Klingon space.” With only access to a handful of thrusters, they would need them all to change a single vector of their course. Meaning any corrections would need to be slow. She prayed they would be.

Almar’s steady voice came over the comm, “Engineering is ready, Captain. RCS systems at the ready. Reinforcing structural integrity… Warp field dissolution in three, two, one…”
The bridge crew held their breath as the sea of skewed stars on the main viewer quickly slid to halt. Without thrusters, the ship moaned in protest, and the hull began to rattle as the ship continued to skid along at intense speeds. They’d planned it well enough to allow maximum distance between them and the Klingon shipyards, hoping the Vindicator’s humbled maneuvering thrusters would be able to slow them down enough for a tow into dock.

“Reverse thrusters!” Ivanova said over the growing, creaking strain of the hull, “How’s she doing?!”

“Structural integrity is holding!” Someone shouted.

Continuing like this for nearly ten minutes, their speed slowly dropped to a semi-comfortable quarter impulse. Assuming a threatening posture, a pair of Klingon warships descended upon the Vindicator at break-neck pace. They approached the ship as they looked her over, weapons charged.

Rochelle had expected them to either hail them or open fire, instead they did neither. The sharp buckle of a pair of tractor beams latching onto them rocked the ship. The green glow of energy holding the Vindicator steady, also slowly reduced their speed as they approached the Klingon shipyards. While she was surprised, to say she was also thankful would have been understatement. The Vindicator was nearly without power, and her own energy reserves were just as dwindling.

As the shipyards came into view, it took all of 15 minutes for the Klingons to bring her into range, and for the ship to dock. She slid effortlessly into the sharp mooring of the green and brown station, using up nearly all the space in one of the largest they had available.

As soon as the ship tapped to a halt, she stood up out of her chair and wasted no time moving to the next stage of their repairs. “Engineering, work with the Klingons to repair our engines as quickly as possible. Security, restrict access to this ship to essential repair teams and diplomatic guests only. I want Marines stationed at all key access points while we are docked with this station.

“I’ll be in my ready room,” she sighed.
