| Personal History | Rotek was born to Jetek and Helen Nelson on the Klingon Homeworld. His childhood was complicated due to his mixed heritage. It was difficult for his parents to be accepted by honorable society due to their choice to mate. Rotek was seen as a bit of a ... abomination by more traditional members of his community. As a result, he was shunned from participating in a lot of normal childhood events. After spending time helping his mother in her small clinic, he developed a strong interest in medicine. As he grew of age, he completed standard school, and despite complications, enrolled in the Klingon Defence Academy where he studied medicine. After graduating from the Academy he was assigned to the IKS Neklar as a medical officer. He worked very hard to climb the ranks. When the opportunity came up for him to participate in an exchange program with Starfleet, he was ... convinced to join the program. Soon after, he requested, and was approved, to transfer to Starfleet. After upgrading at Starfleet Academy he was assigned to the USS Jenev as an Assistant Medical Officer. Eventually the opportunity to transfer to the USS Vindicator came up, which he eagerly accepted with the position of Chief Medical Officer. While preparing for the transfer, he received information that his parents had died aboard their private ship when it was attacked by the Borg. The news devastated him, but as a "strong Klingon" he focused on his duties and making them proud of him. He initially hid the news from his crew mates, trying to keep his armor of being a Klingon. |
