Mission:
In the Dark
Location: planet surface
=/\= Vindicator Camp =/\=
The snow blew heavily in the cold wind as the night progressed on that foreign world. Matt Caldwell began his march out to the perimeter, so that he could relieve the sentry and take his own turn at the watch. His boots stomped through the snow and he could feel his body sink with every step. This made it that much harder to walk in the area but his progress was not slowed.
He passed a lone figure, in the darkness. "Heading back to camp?" He quipped, recognizing that the being was humanoid.
Jasmine wasn't in patrol she just needed time to think. Not necessary about what the captain said but how to make this relationship work. Noticing that it was the security chief she eyed him, "appears that way." She said coldly, "my apologies commander it's been a long day."
10 years ago, Lieutenant Junior Grade Caldwell might have demanded immediate respect, and perhaps even pulled rank. But age and wisdom had dulled that particularly annoying quality in him and he simply nodded: "Quite alright, Lieutenant. This away mission has been very hard on all of us. I am just about to start my own shift at the perimeter. Is there anything I should know before I arrive?"
Pulling out a PaDD that held the map of the area and the special communication link to her snipers. "I have two sniper teams here and here. They've been ordered to shoot anything that moves in this area make sure your IFF responder is on."
Caldwell nodded and quickly confirmed that the unit was functioning. "Understood." He began to pass her, but then he stepped back: "I heard about what happened between you and the Captain."
Jasmine just shrugged, "it comes with the territory. Majority of the time Naval and Marines don't see eye to eye on the amount of force that is needed." Jasmine said eyeing the Naval security chief also picking up the sense the man at least had somewhat of an idea of amount of force needed to keep people safe.
Matt shrugged his shoulders: "Sometimes fleet officers are too hesitant to use their assets to neutralize threats. I just wanted you to know that I felt you did the right thing. If that creature returns and threatens the camp, I will open fire on it. I'm prepared to face the consequences from the Captain."
"Good." Jasmine said stopping in her tracks to turn and face the commander, "cause I'm completely shocked and flabbergasted why your security personnel didn't follow suit when my Marines opened fire on the beast."
"We were waiting for the creature to get closer .... and my second in command was injured during the attack." Matt struggled to hide his irritation. "I don't appreciate my orders being questioned, particularly by someone straight out of the Academy."
Jasmine just laughed and padded the commander on the cheek with her gloved hand. "Just because I'm a second lieutenant and bottom of the officer food chain doesn't mean I'm green. And just because your a commander doesn't always make you an expert."
"Perhaps." He ended the conversation with silence, as he proceeded to work in the other direction. This was not the time to get into an argument though she was pushing all the right buttons to illicit an angry response.
Nodding Jasmine continued her walk back into camp.
