Mission: Are You Touched?

Teá was exhausted with yet another sleepless night with the same bizarre dream/nightmare. The dreams always start the same with Teá near the entrance of a dimly lit lab, save for a large metallic box in the middle of the lab. The size of the box could easily fit a fully grown adolescent with ease, but every time she would get close to the box she would wake up. The wake was jolting, confusing and truthfully terrifying for Teá, the dream/nightmare always felt so real even though she never actually saw anything. The rush of adrenaline, the need to know what is in the box and then the frustration of never being able to learn what is in the box.
Every time she woke she had the chills, in a flopping sweat and shaking, with yet another shriek Teá was wide awake looking around like she was some crazed women. After she realized where she was Teá was able to take several deep calming breaths, and when her hands finally stopped shaking she slid out of bed. Grabbing a glass of water she sat down in front of her console and dialed Sean hoping he was up still.
"You're up late, gorgeous," he said with a smile as the channel opened. He had just switched to the night shift, and this was his first night off after a week of it. He wasn't going to sleep for a few hours yet.
"Hey babe", Teá said looking as if she just came back from a jog or the shower, "How are the nights treating you?" Teá said knowing he was working the night shift now.
"It's so quiet at night, makes the vacuum outside the ship seem so much closer," he answered, looking over Teá with curiosity. He knew she normally would be sleeping right now, so the call was a surprise.
"You'll get used it." Teá said giving him a small smirk, "so guess who I met at the Vindicator's awards ceremony?"
"Get used to it? I love it," Sean insisted, grinning wide. "Who?"
"Amelia's parents." Teá said with a smirk.
"What were they doing there, aren't they at Utop-" Sean started to ask, then remembered. "Vindicator had to put in at those Klingon shipyards? I'm glad to hear Pond's parents got out okay..."
"Yeah and I think Pond was happy to see them as well, they're interesting people." Teá said with a small chuckle.
"That's not always a good thing," Sean insisted with a laugh. "They're good people, though they're sometimes more trouble than I can handle." He shook his head. "Pond's the picture of sanity compared to Diz though."
Teá just smirked. "Well, I think I made a impression on Diz, it's to be seen if it lasts or if it even was a good impression," Teá said shrugging, "and well Corey was - I don't know, and I'm good at reading people and I couldn't get a read on him."
"Cor's quite a sly one, he wouldn't have made it up the ranks if he wasn't. I don't know if you have any idea how much trouble Pond and her family find, yet somehow dance out of..." Sean shook his head. "Pond and her parents took me off one weekend for a proper pub crawl with a brawl an' everythin', ending with a round of the black stuff for all involved. Wouldn't think brass would get involved with a pub brawl."
Teá looked shocked, "the Cor I met was very watchful and very much by the book."
Sean laughed, his mouth open wide, his head tossed back and his dreadlocks bouncing. "He didn't do nothin', at all, that seemed... out of sorts? At all?"
"I mean not nothin', he did show a minor PDA." Teá shrugged.
"Only minor? Diz must have been behaving herself that night... or there was a lot of other brass around." Sean shook his head.
"That there was. I mean hell you could feel it in the air, everyone trying to be proper and all that boring shit that you gotta do when 'they' roll around." Teá said through giggles.
"Pond musta' got somethin', otherwise I don't see why they would have shown up then," Sean returned with a head shake.
"Pond was made XO." Teá said with a small grin.
"Who'd be touched enough to do that?" Sean demanded with a head shake. "I thought Ivanova was actin' CO on Vindi? She's not touched."
"Ivanova was promoted to captain as well." Teá said, "and she ain't happy with me on board."
"Ivanova isn't touched though," Sean muttered, still shaking his head. "You've been though some rough stuff though, she'll come around after you've had the chance t' talk it through with a witchdoctor." Sean made a face. "How'd I pick that up from Pond? I mean the counselor."
"Maybe, I mean I may just be past redemption." Teá said shrugging.
"Don't you go sayin' that, gorgeous," Sean insisted, laying a hand on the comscreen. "You just need t' talk t' the right person, is all. Someone who's allowed to know what you've been up to."
"Why are you so good to me?" Teá asked wiping a single tear away.
"'Cause I love you," he answered, grinning wide. "And you put up with me silliness, and get along with me best mate. But most of all, 'cause I love you and you're gorgeous."
"Damn you're smooth when you want to be." Teá said chuckling, "I wish I could be in your arms right now."
"I tell nothin' but the truth, cross me heart," Sean insisted, making a face so serious it was almost comical.
Teá couldn't help herself, she burst out laughing, "oh my dear sweet sweet love, you would make a awful awful 'spook'." Teá said as she continued to chuckle.
He beamed wide at her. "Why hide me fibs when me charm gets me off the hook every time?" he asked with a wink.
"Not all the time," Teá said with a wink, "but yes your charm is very contagious."
He smiled at her a long minute, then frowned softly. "What are you doin' awake this time of the night?"
"Just a weird dream." Teá said deciding to leave out that it was a reoccurring one and what was in it. Mainly because she didn't know what it meant.
"Weird dreams don't leave you sittin' up on he comm in the wee hours of the mornin', gorgeous," Sean observed with a frown.
Sean was right. In her mind it wasn't a nightmare it was weird, "well maybe not for most people, but for me weird well have me sittin' up."
"Now which one of us can't tell a fib?" He crossed his arms and slouched back in his chair as he asked.
"Somethin' about the dream feels so familiar but I can't place it," Teá said rubbing her eyes, "and it's not the good kind of familiar either."
"What's the dream about?" Sean sighed softly.
Teá looked at Sean. "I'm standing in a lab, dimly lit but you can make out that there's something in the middle of the room. As I walk closer to see what it is, each time I get to the same spot and wake up in a cold sweat — I only get a glance at what's in the center of the lab, it's a large cube."
"D'ya have anything happen in a lab?" Sean asked, a frown worrying at his lip. He slid his fingers through his dreadlocks along the right side of his head, as he considered. "No need for details if it was anythin' from your assignments. Just seems an odd setting for a dream."
"No....err I don't know, but the lab feels like a place I've been in my past prior to me joining the Marines." Teá said, "but I don't know when I would've been in a lab like that."
Sean sighed softly. "This sounds like something you need to talk out with a counselor," he insisted and leaned forward again. "Promise me you will?"
"I promise, I'm gonna do everything in my power to get myself healthy so we as a couple have the best shot possible." Teá said with a smile, "I'm done running from my past."
"Good. Do you think you'd be able to get back to sleep if you tried now?"
Teá nodded and gave Sean a small grin, "yeah, speaking with you always helps calming me down," Teá grinned, "thank you for bearing with me through this."
"I just wish I could be doing more," he returned, smiling at her again. "Get some sleep, an' we'll talk again soon."
"Aye aye sir," Teá winked at him, "love you." She added before closing the link and heading back to her bed for some hopefully restful sleep.
