"I had no idea..." Robyn said speaking to the bar before raising her head and meeting Sallys interested eyes. "No idea at all." She folded her arms and shook her head.
Sally pasted a suitably sympathetic expression onto her pretty face, secretly wondering how Robyn could have missed it.
"It happens." she said philosophically."I mean men just expect us to know what they're thinking apart from you know what ofcourse thats always on their mind but everything else I mean why they feel down do they want to go out or stay in everything thats men for you."
Robyn had been thinking back to the last time she and Scott had shared time together and how he had suddenly changed his mood and the ambience of the whole afternoon.
" I think I may have said something." she told Sally biting her lower lip thoughtfully, staring at the edge of the little mat with the Bernard logo neatly in the corner.
"Oh?" Sally replied eager to know what the something might be.
"Mmmmm..." Robyn murmured as bit by bit little things began to fall into place. "Thing is...what do I do about it?"
She looked back at Sally.
"Well that depends if you feel the same." came the reasonable responce.
"Oh no." Robyn replied at once. " I mean I like him alot...very much in fact...I'm fond of him."
Sallys face, cupped in her palms, showed she was listening and willing to offer advice where necessary.
"We met at the Academy..did all the same training, same exams you know the sort of thing."
Sally nodded.
"Spent free time together...not just us two, there was a group, same interests, had a great time doing some crazy things at times."
She smiled at remembered crazinesses and Sally did too but didnt ask what they were not wanting Robyn to forget what she was telling.
"We all went our seperate ways after graduation..postings and specialising you know."
Again Sally nodded, feeling that this was largely irrelevant but coloured in the background so to speak.
"Now ofcourse Scott is here." Robyn sighed and looked again at the bright gold logo.
Sally willed her to go on, tantalised by what she might reveal but Robyn was silent, losing herself in the memories of recent days.
"It was really good when he turned up..such a surprise to see him." she said after a few moments.Again came a small smile to the mat and again Sally echoed it.
"I just never expected it to go this way....never..and now ofcourse we see each other everyday and work together quite closely more often than not if we're on the same shift.I cant request the CMO to keep us apart." she added, frowning at the prospect.
" No..because I'm not involving him in personal stuff, we have to work it out ourselves.... but what can I 'do'?" she asked again, raising her face to her sympathetic companion.
"One of two things then." Sally said, her chin still cupped in her hands. "Either find him and tell him you know whats going on and that you're sorry not to feel the same but you dont but you want to remain friends and thats important because you have to see each other everyday and need a good working environment without ill feelings or awkwardness and because of the fun you shared in the past and all that or you say nothing at all and just carry on as usual and let him get over it which he 'probably' will....in time."
"Yes" Robyn said slowly, neither option appealing to her.
"Or you could apply for transfer if its really too difficult." Sally said, understanding the quandry.
"No!" Robyn said quickly. "No I cant do that. I dont want to anyway. I've only just got here. I can hardly request another posting so soon and certainly not without explaining why. No..thats entirely out of the question....and anyway, it wouldnt solve the problem."
"Well thats it with careers isnt it..." Sally said "..you and me both."
She gave a short resigned sigh thinking of the huge stock of mementos she had to sell but glancing again at Robyn, said nothing of her own challenges.
"Sorry I cant suggest anything else.." she said "...I wish I could."
It was a short sentence for Sally but she meant what she said for it was plain to see the turmoil the young doctor was swimming in and saying anything else wouldnt be helpful at this stage.
Robyn forced a smile and straightened up.
"Thankyou." she said. "I'm sorry to have bothered you with it."
"Its no bother." Sally said straightening up too. "If he comes back shall I tell him you're looking for him?"
Robyn considered it.
"Nnnno...its ok..I'll find him or at least see him at work."
"Ok." Sally replied simply.
"Bye" she said a moment later in responce to Robyns word of farewell and watched the young woman head to the entrance then disappear from sight. She didnt envy her the situation even if Doctor Fisher was someone she wouldnt mind worrying over.
She shrugged. It might all yet come right and, with any luck, she would learn the outcome in due course.
She turned her head and her eyes settled on the Frenchman at the end of the bar.
Now there was another challenge.
