Mourning.
That's what most of the last few months had been for the scaled Cardassian, his heart broken apart by the loss of the ship that he had spent his time with, he'd bled for her, shed tears over her, nurtured her, fixed her complaints and soothed her worries. The Vindicator had been as much alive as any of the crew, the ship meant as much to Almar as Rochelle did, as much as any of his friends.
Having very little to focus on in the first few weeks was just as painful, he felt the loss repeatedly every morning and every night, but all that had changed when the Shipyard Chief had approached him on the command of Admiral Red, a new project was being commissioned to replace the lost capital ship, there were rumors of war emanating from the Klingon Empire and the Romulan Star Empire and with the Cheydinhall section being placed as it was, it would require a strong presence in the sector.
Although it had started off slowly, the project was beginning to pick up speed and the design process was almost complete, the space-frame was finished and held in the dock, the design program didn't have a name yet but it was being touted as the Vindicator construction project due to the designation it was going to be given on launch, the USS Vindicator NX 78213-F.
Almar was hoping against all hope that the Admiral would approve his request to officially name the project the Vindicator Class, it was a slim chance, but one that he thought had a real chance of being accepted given the connection between Admiral Red and the ship's future CO.
Striding around the room, displays surrounded him and flooded him with information, technical readouts, specifications for everything from the torpedo launchers down to the carpets in each of the enlisted bunks, it was a glorious moment for the Cardassian and for the first time in a long time he felt at home, a feeling he hadn't felt since he was promoted out of the Engineering bay on the Vindicator.
The MSD that they had been working on was on a holo-projector in the centre of the room, a huge 3D model of the ship turned slowly, angled with the nose slightly upwards and displaying the lower engineering hull and base of the saucer. The ship itself had already been classified by the Corps of Engineers as a Command and Control Heavy Cruiser, a ship designed for multi-role missions while maintaining the offensive capabilities of her predecessor.
A slight sigh passed through his lips as one of the enlisted men thrust a mug of coffee into his hand and wordlessly took off a stack of padds from one of the desks, whisking them away to be added into the specifications.
The large windows on one side of the room opened out into the belly of the shipyard, the docking arms retracted and the frame of the new ship held in place by a network of scaffolding, swarms of workerbees surrounded it, checking every little seam, every connecting point, every anchor to make sure that the beast would be solid from the centre outwards against all threats that might seek to shake it down to the core.
Moments later, the same enlisted man came back over to the Cardassian and handed him a padd that bought a smile to the reptilian lips, "It's the requisition orders for the Quantite Fusion Core and Slipstream Generator Drive," the young man said with a raise of his eyebrow at the smile, as a Vulcan he was unaccustomed to being smiled at when dealing with paperwork.
"Time and time again I used to wish I was back at Utopia Planetia doing this same job, now that I'm back doing it, albeit temporarily, I wish that I could just get back onto the ship," Almar replied as he accepted the padd, double checked the information was correct and handed it back after signing it off with his thumb print.
"Get this over to the quartermaster as soon as possible, we'll hopefully be fitting it in another couple of weeks, once the engineering hull has been built." he added as he turned to look out over the space frame.
"Aye sir," the Vulcan replied as he turned on his heels and made his way quickly out of the room, not stopping to collect any other information or padds.
