SD 241211.24 JL | Dr Ke'al, Dr Lovok & LtJG Roswell | Examinations

Posted on Sat Nov 24th, 2012 @ 9:09pm by Lieutenant JG Saia Roswell

1,308 words; about a 7 minute read

Mission: Romulan Ale.. I mean Aide
Location: Colony Medical Centre
Timeline: Immediately following away team arrival

Doctor Lovok separated from the Governor and some of the Starfleet officers, taking those in the teal uniforms to see his patients.

The medical centre wasn't much of a centre, more like a box made up of four plasteel walls. It had clearly been there for some time now and they had made the best of their limited resources but it wasn't much more than an emergency shelter.

Lovok walked to what was clearly his workstation with padds, note books and some basic medical and scientific equipment including a microscope, "As you can see I have limited resources."

Ke’al looked around at the makeshift medical center and then decided not to waste any more time with pleasantries. “The Federation has a rather light textbook on Romulan physiology and how it might equate or not with that of the Vulcan, Doctor. Any information you can supply us with regarding this illness and Romulan physiology would be groundbreaking to say the least. Though the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire have a long and sorted past we have far less on record concerning medical practices then I would like.”

Ke’al was making an mental note about the things he would have to have transported down here before he would even be able to begin a diagnosis of this illness. “Doctor Lovok, will you permit us to beam down a field treatment facility and set it up next to your medical center here? Doing so will help facilitate a quicker cure, prevent us from having to beam specimens back and forth between the ground and our ship and allow us to treat the inflicted here in their homes. I am of course sensitive to the impact this may have on the colony so it’s your call.”

Lovok considered the request. Having access to better medical technology would of course be the best choice but he wondered how some of the others would react. Whatever happened he could deal with it, "Please do."

The Romulan doctor walked over to a cabinet setup next to the table with his equipment and pulled out an old looking padd like thing and held it out to the Caitian, "This is a standard medical database for Romulans. I may have been doing this for years but every now and then I still need to look something up." he raised a brow, "Do you read Romulan?"

Ke'al suddenly wished he did but said, "No Doctor, however, the ships computer can translate this for me. I'll transmit it immediately and get to work on having that field kit sent down. We will need to bring in a small team to construct the treatment facility but I will restrict their movements to the construction site only."

Lhaerrh nodded to Ke'al and moved over to one of the patients, "The symptoms present mildly at first. Weakness and shortness of breath but it quickly progresses to more severe symptoms." he put a hand on his microscope, "This has been my most advanced piece of diagnostic equipment for some time."

Saia followed in. The medicine had taken more effect over time, allowing her to calm and reach the rationality that if the Romulans were going to try to capture or kill them, they'd have tried already. She was still nervous, but there were orders to follow. She moved to the workstation and took a look over it all. She looked over her shoulder, "May I take a look at your notes?"

The Romulan doctor nodded and motioned the young Trill to a stack of hastily written notes, also all in Romulan of course, "Everything I was able to document is there. I do not believe this to be viral or bacterial. That I would have been able to see so there must be some effect in the environment."

He leaned against the table for a moment, "As is the case with many things, different people are impacted at different rates.. but I have heard that most of our colony have begun to feel weaker in recent days so it is spreading."

Ke'al noted that his Romulan counterpart was looking a little rough, which was understandable in the midst of an epidemic, especially when you were the only doctor in a colony of hundreds. "Doctor Lovok, forgive me for saying but you look little better than some of your patients. Are you also stricken with this illness?" Ke'al removed his tricorder from his belt and waited for the Doctor's answer.

Saia looked confused as she looked over the notes and bit her lip, "Doctor, can you send these too?" She started to make use of the microscope and other instruments to look at the specimens at the workstation.

"I have begun to feel more fatigued of late, more so than I would have thought." Lovok admitted then nodded to Ke'al, "If you must."

Ke'al held the small cylindrical probe up in front of the the Romulan doctor and began his scan, then answered Lieutenant Roswell's question. "Lieutenant, if you could scan those notes with your tricorder as a visual reference we can send them to the ship for translation, yes. In addition I think we should approach this as environmental for the time being it would be best if we steer clear of the local flora and fauna. Air quality and soil samples will also be necessary for a complete diagnosis. Can your team cover that while I work with the patients, Lieutenant?"

Saia nodded as she scanned the notes, "Yes, sir." After the scans, she nodded to Saunders, "Looks like you get to play in the dirt, after all." The combination of the medicine and something to research and study and analyze seemed to make her seem normal. Or at least a capable officer. The trembling had stopped and she didn't see the Romulans as potential captors, but rather victims. She was able to focus fully on the puzzle at hand.

Ke'al turned his attention back to Doctor Lovok, "Based on what I'm reading in this initial scan you are right, Doctor Lovok. There are no antigens in the blood stream to suggest infection, nor do you show an elevated K-cell count. I will need to cross reference this with the other patients to be sure, of course. I will also need to brush up on the mechanics of copper based blood so I know what I'm really looking at here." Ke'al's fur suddenly rippled with frustration. He had an expert in Romulan physiology right here, he held the tricorder out to the Doctor. "Do you see anything out of the ordinary here?"

The Romulan Doctor examined the readings for a moment. He was not the best with Federation standard writing but he could follow enough, "It appears that histidine is breaking down in my blood." he glanced to the Starfleet Doctor, "Though this does not tell us why."

He looked to the science team, "A full environmental analysis will indeed be necessary and those take time. Perhaps while that is being worked on we can devise a way to extend the life of patients to give us time."

"That we can do, Doctor Lovok. Once the support staff arrive with the field treatment facility we should be able to replicate histidine and possibly allow time released infusions to disperse in your blood stream. It will break down if we can't find the cause behind this epidemic but it will buy us some time. I believe once your blood oxygen levels are back up the symptoms should abate. Now if you will excuse me, Doctor, I need to get some equipment beamed down here." With that Ke'al walked to the door of the Romulan medical center and stepped out into the temperate afternoon air.

Saia picked up her kit and waited for Saunders before making her way back out.
