The Vindicator was back on her way toward the unknown and as it turned out, so was its Captain. He was on his way to meet his new chief engineer.

Olan stepped into the main engineering of his new ship and paused to take in the expanse. It was every bit as impressive as he imagined.

Like most other main engineering he'd ever seen it was a hive of activity, the walls lines with work stations and displays, some in use and others not.

The larger open space not far from the core held the typical "pool table" station that became familiar in Starfleet ships in the last several decades. This one certainly seemed state of the art. Along with the typical flat surface to display information for all to see it had several areas you could clearly see had recessed display panels, the latest in thin LCARS terminals, similar to what he had found in his own ready room.

He moved past the table and the officers there. The few who were new to the crew stood rigid upon sight of him and he waved them down just as quickly. He did not need to be the one to distract them from their work.

Olan made his way to the large area at the heart of the ship; the quad core arrangement similar to the previous Vindicator but clearly updated. It had two cores working at the moment and they thrummed away, feeding power to the whole ship.

The Cardassian Chief Engineer had been sitting in his office when he noticed another officer walk in, wearing the scarlet tones of command, he caught a flash of the pips as the light caught them and stood up quickly, stepping out into the bay, "Impressive aren't they Captain," he mused as he fell into place next to Dar.

"That they are. Quite a lot like the set we had on the previous ship, though clearly these are a little more refined." the Captain replied as he turned to look at the Cardassian, "It's nice to meet you, Commander." he said, extending a hand.

Almar nodded and shook the offered hand, "Likewise sir," he replied before turning back to the cores, "We've managed to refine quite a few of the systems that keep the cores stable at higher outputs, in addition we also managed to realign the warp field and modify the coils to reduce the warp signature slightly."

Olan nodded, having read up on the specs for the ship he was familiar with the changes, "So I read. I'm looking forward to see how she performs. I didn't hear of any major problems on the initial shakedown and trip here so I assume we are fully prepared to move on."

"Indeed we are," the Cardassian replied as he moved to the "pool table" in the middle of engineering, "As you can see, the ship outperformed all expectations on the shakedown cruise, the core worked much better than we had anticipated."

Dar followed and nodded, "And the slipstream drive?"

"I... and most of the crew are still getting used to the slipstream drive, however it performed as required when we used it to reach you," Almar replied with a nod as he bought up the reports on the holodisplay in the centre of the console, "We should have no problems re-engaging slipstream when you ask for it."

The Captain scanned the reports for a moment, "Excellent. Now, is there anything you want to test or tweak before we get too far into something else?"

"Not that I can think of sir," he replied quickly, "The majority of systems seem to be working as expected, there are one or two minor happenings with non-essential systems, but that is to be expected in the day to day operations of the ship."

"Good, good. So, Commander I've quizzed you pretty well... given this is our first meeting do you have any questions for me?"

"Just one sir," the Cardassian replied with a slight smile, "How often do you expect me on the bridge?" he asked quickly, "I much prefer being down here, where I can keep an eye on things personally, I believe the previous Chief Engineer was somewhat similar in her approach."

Olan nodded, "Well face time with the rest of the senior staff is important so I would want you up there for a portion of your shift around two or three days a week, not counting staff meetings. When you put that time in is entirely up to you."

"Understood," Almar replied simply, "I'll rotate myself onto a couple of bridge shifts,"

"Good. We'll be moving on shortly but we won't be pressing the engines unless we have to. Need to give the science teams time to scan everything down to the atom after all." Olan smirked.

"I'll boost the cores up to eighty percent and increase the power available to the sensor arrays and the diagnostic subroutines," Almar responded with a slight nod.

Olan nodded, "Coordinate with operations as necessary, Commander. I'll leave you to it now."

"Very well Captain," the Cardassian replied with a mild smile, "I'll see you on the bridge soon."

The Captain turned to have another look at the cores, smiled and headed back out of main engineering, satisfied.
