910 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Romulan Ale.. I mean Aide
Location: Romulan Colony, Governor's Office

Dr. Lovok moved quickly through the streets toward the Governor's office building. He had to pause a few times to catch his breath as the effects of the illness were still very much present in him.

Once he arrived he moved right past the guards stationed and into the office.

"Sov'aal. What have you done?"

"Doctor I assure you I don't know what you are talking about. " The Governor replied.

Lovok walked right up to the desk, "Armed guards on the Starfleet officers? The scattering field? They are here to help us and you turn weapons on them and trap them here!"

"I warned you that deal would end badly and now look that they've forced you into!"

"That deal saved the lives of everyone on this colony, or would you have liked to join those still aboard that hulk up there?" Sov'aal asked referring to the second ship destroyed above the colony.

Lovok scoffed, "We've become indentured servants of the Tal'Shiar. You might recall we decided to come out here to avoid the turmoil back home caused in no small part by the Tal'Shiar themselves!"

He opened his mouth to reply but it was hard to argue with the doctor. "You were there when the deal was made. I did not hear you objecting at the time. For the moment what is done is done. What we need to do now is determine what to do about it."

"We cannot expect the Starfleet ship to intervene on our behalf but holding their people here will force their hand eventually." Lovok pointed out.

"We cannot afford to make an enemy of the Federation OR be linked to what ever business the Tal'shiar is up to."

The doctor sighed, "We are already linked to those activities. It will be revealed in time. I have no doubt about that."

The Governor shook his head. "I meant future acts." He took a deep breath. "It would seem that after this, our usefulness to the Tal'shiar will be at an end. I doubt they will let us remain here now that our involvement with them is known."

"They will kill us." Lovok stated simply.

"Then We fight back, help free the federations if it will help push the Tal'shiar off this planet " Sov'aal countered not even sure he believed in their chances anymore than he believed the doctor believed in them.

Lovok stood straight, "We may not know everyone who is allied with the Tal'Shiar on this planet. There may be none."

Sov'aal was beginning to regret the choice to work with the Tal'Shiar. "What would you suggest then doctor?"

"I am not strategist, Governor, however we could either wait for the Tal'Shiar warbird to depart which seems unlikely with Starfleet here as well... or we ally with Captain Dar to free ourselves of the Tal'Shiar influence." the Doctor suggested.

It was a risky idea because the warbird would crush them all before the Starfleet ship could intervene, if they would at all at this point. Also many of the local Romulan's may find asking for help from Starfleet tough to swallow.

Sov'aal pondered the question at hand for several minutes. Both options were equally hard for him to grasp. "We need to speak to Captain Dar, but we need to do it without raising suspicion. It may be hard to ask, but I believe our only hope would be to ally ourselves with the Federation ship. For all the propaganda we have been fed, they have acted with honor. It has been we who have acted dishonestly."

Lovok nodded, "There is a problem. Captain Dar and the team he arrived with are unaccounted for. I heard some of the security members talking about it on my way over. They cannot find him."

"What about the Commander.. Lansine is it?"

"There has been no sign of him either, however it may have returned to their ship." Lhaerrh said. Ever since the guards showed up to contain all the Starfleet officers he had been attempting to find the two command officers himself to explain things. Though he wasn't about to tell the Governor that.

"Then we need to contact the Vindicator, preferably without the Tal'shiar noticing." That was no small feat but it was their one chance to get out of this alive.

"Who can we trust among our own people?" the doctor wondered aloud, "Or should we attempt to use one of the Starfleet officers?"

"If we can get them one of their communication devices, then they can contact their ship and relay the situation to them."

Lovok nodded and paced for a moment, "I can get into the medical area obviously. They should still be holding some of the Starfleet officers there."

"I should be able to get into the council chamber after dark and get a comm device as long as they havent been moved." Sov'aal stroked his chin

The doctor stopped and considered the situation. Depending on who among them was committed to the Tal'Shiar and was armed could end up shooting them dead if they were discovered, "We'll have to avoid everyone."

"Agreed, however that may be easier said than done."

Lovok nodded and looked to come to decision, "We should both attempt to get one. If we both succeed, fine. If not perhaps one of us will."

The two men regarded each other for a moment then both left to try to salvage the situation they found themselves in.
