Mission: Romulan Ale.. I mean Aide

Saia trembled sitting on the biobed. She heard the words and comprehended them in the back of her mind. She responded with negatives and affirmatives as she was asked about how she felt, etc. She again declined a meeting with a counselor out of habit. Out of the deep seeded need to keep everything to herself.

She heard, "She's still trembling." And then something about using a sedative. She then hopped off the bed.

"I'm just tired." She looked over at the ones scanning and fixing her injuries. "May I please be released so I can rest in my own bed before my shift?" After a pause, she added, "Whatever next shift I am allowed to take."

After she made it out of the bright lights of the medical bay, she made her way to her quarters and cleaned up before lying back on her bed staring into the dark toward the ceiling. Voices sifted into her mind and she felt hands crawl over her body, but she just lay there. Not reacting to the phantom torture.

She didn't hear the door tell her someone was asking for entrance. The voice calling "Saia," just mingled with the other voices. The gentle touch on her pajama covered arm mingled with the phantom gropes. She blinked hearing a strange, "Lights!" being called. She then winced at the brightness and looked over in confusion seeing Saul Bental. She let out a scream and jumped off the bed and huddled there at the corner of the wall. She wasn't even surprised Saul would do this to her as well.

Saul rubbed the back of his neck unsure what to do. Kevin and Nara were still on duty and he had a different rotation, so he was the one to check on her. "Saia. I am looking into finding someone to help you and keep the secret. Which won't be for long since the plan is going along well." She still didn't react and he moved around to kneel on the ground, "Saia? Are you there?"

She had her knees pressed into her chest and her arms wrapped around her head. Saul sighed, "Saia, I'm not going to touch you. When did you last eat?" With no reply, he ordered some pudding from the replicator and set it before her. "It's still your favorite, I hope. I'm going to do what I can to get Doctor McDuff here quicker. Nara might not like the plan I have to use, but I hope she understands it's for you." He took the blanket off the bed and placed it over her.

He watched her for about fifteen minutes but her body did not relax. Her trembling grew worse from nerves and tiredness. Sighing, he left for only a moment and returned with a personal administration hypo. He pulled out a vial of mild sedative and administered it to her. She relaxed slightly. Enough for him to lift her onto the bed with only weak struggles that broke his heart. He sucked it into the dark corners, forgetting it after his hands left her body. He covered her with the blanket and put the pudding on the bedside table.

Later that evening, Saul, Nara and Kevin sat in the living room with coffee. The other two were taking it in after Saul explained his plan. Nara, with forced calm set her cup down, "Is this a ruse or are you really a father?"

Saul sighed, but wasn't really surprised. Kevin swallowed and went to stand in the bedroom door to watch Saia toss and turn fitfully. "How long ago did you give her the last one?"

"In a way, both, Nara. She had one around noon, another about 4. She might be due for another in a couple of hours. It's mild. I was given it after an intense mission, but didn't use it all. She needs something stronger if she's to really rest, but even her rest will not be well. Medicated rest isn't good really. Just makes it easier for those caring for her." Saul sat back and looked into his cup.

Nara watched as Kevin fidgeted at the door, worrying over Saia. Nara looked back over at Saul, "Is she really pregnant? Even you aren't clever enough to do that."

Saul sighed, "I've known about Saia's situation for awhile. I didn't get a chance to let you in on that between the fighting and the...," he paused and looked at Kevin before smirking at Nara, "Anyway. I contacted Lorina McDuff about Saia and over a few weeks, we came up with the plan. If Starfleet knew we were getting a civilian to help Saia, they'd make her see an official counselor. I wasn't sure about civilians being allowed on the ship, so we came up with the whole moral code of marrying a girl you knocked up. Of course, DNA being so damned unique as it is, the child will be mine." Seeing Nara stand in a huff, "Now, relax. It happened very clinically. I was in the other room when she inseminated herself. I had to be at her place for alibi reasoning. Nara, I never even kissed her. She's a fucking lesbian. You know I..."

"Shut the fuck up, Saul!"

Kevin stepped in angrily after Nara screamed. He hissed, "She has enough to deal with without you two doing this. At least keep your voices down!"

Saul stood and stepped to Nara, whispering, "She's been wanting a kid anyway. She was looking at sperm donor files for months before we talked. Besides, it's only fair. You have a kid. I have a kid."

Nara glared at him and grabbed his collar since she couldn't yell, "This is NOT a joke. MY kid is tormented!"

Saul gently reached up and held her wrist, "Exactly why I'm doing this. It'll be at least a month before the plan to get Saia's grandmother out is even in motion. Can she even last that long? She was given a day. Do you think she'll make it to her shift or will they decide to cart her off to a facility? She's losing her wits, Nara. Whatever happened to her on the planet was the last straw."

"No, it wasn't." The soft, hoarse voice called from the bedroom. Kevin rushed in and smiled as he sat on the bed. Saia wrapped the blanket around herself, "I do need your doctor, Saul, but I'll be able to make it to my duty shift."

Nara released Saul and stepped back, "And what about us while this woman comes here to marry you?"

"I'm sorry. As soon as this is all straightened out, she and I will divorce." Saul gathered his uniform jacket and moved toward the door.

"And the kid?" Nara looked at him judgmentally.

He didn't look at her. After a moment, he turned his head to a side, but still not looking at her. "I didn't really think of that. I will take care of it, Nara."

"I don't mean financially, Saul. Will the child even know it has a father? You know how your life is."

He looked at her sharply, keeping his voice soft, but dripping cold, "I'm focusing on Saia now. Perhaps you should. There's about 6 months to worry about this other kid." He stepped out leaving Nara fuming.

Before the door even finished swooshing, Nara called out, "Goodnight," and walked out catching up with Saul silently. Saul didn't acknowledge her nor move away.

They walked around the circle of the corridor several times before Nara finally spoke. "I do understand, but could there not be any other way?"

"You didn't let me finish, Nara. The kid isn't actually mine."

"Well, you sure made it sound like it was."

"Because sometimes I feel like it is. I forget the fact that when she went to see if she was pregnant, she was already a month pregnant. The insemination was pointless. She had a one night stand after a rough night and she had stopped protection when she decided she wanted a kid and the jerk didn't tell her he didn't even bother with it."

"Still, Saul..." She looked down and stopped walking, and he hollowed suit.

He saw the pain in her eyes. He touched her shoulder, "You're still my Imzadi. This is for Saia. Simple as that. For a little Trill girl that I am extremely protective of. It's also for the woman I am so in love with that if I can prevent the pain of someone she cares for, I will do anything." He chuckled, "Besides, if we have an affair, that's a really good reason for a divorce."

Nara laughed, but then frowned and pushed away, "Saul, it's not clever to watchers. It's scandalous."

He still chuckled, "I'm a bad boy and you like it. And no offense, but could your reputation be much better?" His face fell seeing the glare, "Ok, I get it, but look at it this way. The way it seems, she cheated on me, but I decided to marry her anyway to help take care of a kid that's not even mine. I'm pretty honorable that way. Then you, an old love, innocently get seduced by me and I'm evened out to a bad guy again. You just got caught up in temptation."

Nara laughed and shook her head, "We'll deal with the side effects as they come. Saia comes first."

He touched her face in the graveyard shift emptiness of the corridor, "Let's go to my quarters."

She nodded and they stepped into the turbolift hiding the smirks and resisting their urges until the doors of his quarters swooshed closed. Then it was a flurry.
