After the senior staff began to depart the Meeting Room at the Captain's dismissal, Caldwell walked over to Captain Neyes and sought his attention. "Sir, I was wondering if we could speak privately for a few moments?"
"Shoot." Landon said, recycling his old coffee into the wall replicator.
"Thank you, sir" Matt replied. Thinking for a moment, he spoke carefully: "Sir, first of all, it's a pleasure to join your crew. I'm very excited at having the chance to work for you."
Neyes smiled. "Well, I know we've worked together for a while, Commander. I appreciate that, though." Landon and Mathew had never really gotten to know one another on the ship in the past. Helm and Security weren't exactly interchangeable.
"The reason I called you aside was to inquire about the Security Department. If Commander Hayden is soon to depart the ship, is Starfleet sending a replacement?"
"Nope." Landon smirked. "The fleet has taken massive casualties," he shrugged, "...which is probably why I'm not being replaced either, honestly. You're the new department head. You have some reservations?"
Caldwell shook his head: "No sir. To be honest, I'd welcome this opportunity. I haven't had the chance to be a department head since I was the Chief on the Intrepid, and she was a much more meager vessel."
Neyes almost snorted, "Heh. You aren't kidding. My first day on this beast was like trying to find my way out of a maze. Sometimes I'm afraid to leave past deck five. And yes, it'll be different than on a smaller ship, but I think you can manage just fine."
Matt nodded. "Aye, sir. Thank you. Permission to leave, sir? I'd like to find Commander Hayden and find out more about the department."
Neyes nodded, taking another look at the room. He smiled a little on the inside. It was almost funny, what they'd been through. Funnier still how he felt about the work ahead. "Yeah we've all got crap to do, Commander. Good luck."
"Thank you, sir." Caldwell replied and, with a brief obedient nod, was excused from the room. As the doors opened, he began to jog, hoping to catch Commander Williams before he made it back to his office.
