Mission: Romulan Ale.. I mean Aide
Location: Ready Room

Captain Dar took a few minutes out from the bridge and the progress toward locating the source of the Romulan transmission to head into his ready room for a quick break.

He walked to the windows and looked out into space. They had just entered the planetary system most likely to have been the origin point and there was actually a couple habitable planets but they needed to get closer to find settlements. Whatever colony this was it must have been small and lacking in major technology because it didn't show up well on long range sensors.

Then again it could have just been that the planet it was on had been on the other side of the star at the time they arrived.

Olan turned back to sit at his desk and activated his console, "Captain's Log, addendum." he began an addition to his latest log, "We've entered the system where the Romulan signal came from and it won't be long before we determine the exact planet. There are just two to choose from."

"With luck they will be willing to accept help from Starfleet but prior experience with Romulans suggests they will at least be initially resistant. If this goes well it could engender some small measure of trust in Starfleet; or it could make the empire feel a little more put upon by us." he shook his head a bit. Romulans were an odd sort. They were naturally suspicious and it meant the act of offering an honest helping hand could be seen as anything but.

He tapped his console to finish the addition to the log and was just getting out of his chair when the console beeped furiously at him. Olan sat back down and pulled up the notice. It was a priority one, Captain's eyes only communication from Starfleet Command.

Five minutes later, the Captain walked back onto the bridge and stopped at a console, calling up a ship wide announcement.

"This is the Captain speaking. As of this date at 0900 Zulu, the Federation has declared war on the Tholian Assembly in response to unprovoked and deadly attacks on Starfleet vessels in recent days."

He glanced around the bridge officers as he continued, "Our immediate mission is not affected by this as we have yet to receive orders to return to Federation space. Even though Tholian space is a very long way from us, we are to assume a war time alert status. Our updated Rules of Engagement require us to identify any Romulan vessel we encounter as being part of the Empire or a splinter group calling itself the Romulan Commonwealth. This new Commonwealth is allied with the Tholian Assembly and may participate in the war."

"Security and Marines, begin war time drills to ensure we are prepared. That is all." Olan turned off the ship wide announcement and sat down in the big chair, "Let's hope this is quick and uneventful." he said to no one in particular.
